Why Martin Odegaard did not celebrate Kai Havertz’s goal against Wolves

Arsenal fans have noticed that club captain Martin Odegaard did not celebrate Kai Havertz’s opening goal against Wolves on Saturday

Martin Odegaard was too focused on the task at hand to join in the celebrations following Kai Havertz’s goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers, instead opting to receive instructions from manager Mikel Arteta.

The Arsenal captain led his team to a 2-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium in their first Premier League game of the 2024/25 season, starting their title campaign on a strong note.

After Havertz headed in Arsenal’s opening goal from a Bukayo Saka cross in the 25th minute, his teammates quickly surrounded him in celebration. However, Odegaard was notably absent from the jubilant scene. Instead, the Norwegian international was seen running to the touchline, where he was captured on camera engaged in a hurried conversation with Arteta.

Arsenal fans were quick to praise their captain’s focus, with many expressing admiration for his commitment even in the midst of a goal celebration. The moment was highlighted in Arsenal’s bench cam video, shared on their YouTube channel, where supporters voiced their approval.

“Love how Odegaard goes straight to Arteta to get further instructions after the first goal,” one fan commented. Another added, “We are celebrating a goal, and Odegaard runs to Arteta to get further orders and clarifications. Best captain, best manager, best team ever!”

In the second half, Saka doubled Arsenal’s lead, earning praise from Martin Odegaard, who described the young England star as having limitless potential. “There is no roof for this guy,” Odegaard said.

“It is unbelievable the quality that he has and how professional he is, how much he loves the game and how much he puts into it every day. The sky is the limit for him. I’m just happy to have him on my team, and we’ve got to help him improve all the time and push him. I am really happy for him.”

With just over a week remaining in the transfer window, Arsenal are reportedly targeting Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino as their next signing, following the arrivals of David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori. While a striker is also on the club’s wishlist, it remains uncertain if the Gunners will secure a deal for a top forward before the window closes on Friday, August 30.
