Mikel Arteta is desperate to add one former player, who he played with at Arsenal, to his backroom staff ahead of next season.

Former Arsenal star Santi Cazorla has revealed ongoing discussions with Mikel Arteta about a possible return to the club, six years after leaving the Emirates Stadium.

The 39-year-old midfielder, who enjoyed a highly successful spell in North London from 2012 to 2018, scored 29 goals in 180 appearances for the Gunners.

Cazorla became a fan favourite during his tenure, winning the FA Cup twice, including a memorable 3-2 victory against Hull City in the 2014 final, and securing the Community Shield on two occasions. Despite his achievements, injuries marred his final season, preventing him from making any appearances and denying him a proper farewell.

Currently playing for Real Oviedo, Cazorla is focused on helping the team achieve LaLiga promotion through the play-offs. Reports indicate that he plans to retire this summer, ending an illustrious career that saw him earn significant honours, including Euro 2008 and 2012 titles with Spain.

In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Cazorla expressed his deep affection for Arsenal and hinted at a possible future role at the club under the management of his former teammate Mikel Arteta

“I have a very special affection for Arsenal,” he said. “I spent six wonderful years there, and I know how much all the people love me. I was fortunate to share a dressing room with Mikel Arteta, and now he is the manager.
